Cupcakes have an interesting history. 19th Century literature tells us that the “cup” and “tablespoon” became the replacement for “weight” measurements of baking. ! They used to weigh everything in a cake, and then mix it up, finally baking it for hours on a hearth. The “cup” method became the new trend in baking, everything from tea cups to small spoons took the place of weighing ingredients. The cupcake was for impatient cooks who did not want to wait 5 or more hours for a cake to bake on a hearth. So , small tins and metal or china coffee cups were used, making cooking time MUCH faster on the hearth,  and thus the cupcake!

It was  1919 when the company,  Hostess  introduced the famous snack cupcake, but it didn’t become the cream-filled, squiggle-topped Hostess Cup Cake we know today until  about 1950The darling little sweet treat became hugely popular with Mom’s in the 50’s and 60’s baking them for school fund raisinng events. As of late, they are SO popular for birthday parties. No fork, no plate, no knives needed!  We recently celebrated our 5 year olds birthday with a huge TInkerbell Cupcake Cake. Oh was it stunning! Purple and green, and a darling Tinkerbell on an invisible elastic that hovered over the cake. So cute! And it had 27 cupcakes!
